Circle of Knowledge: Engaging Strategies for Teaching and Learning
In 2025 ACE Aotearoa, in collaboration with Ako Aotearoa, has secured a Research and Innovation grant to examine the effectiveness of Teaching and Learning Circles (TLCs) in adult and community education. Over an eight-month period, led by Dr Cherie Chu-Fuluifaga—an expert in Pacific education and the needs of underrepresented learners—the project will explore how TLCs influence teaching practices, identify benefits and challenges, and assess their impact on learner outcomes.
The initiative is supported by Sector Capability Manager Tai Samaeli and Teaching Standards Advisor Jennifer Leahy, who will help implement the circles at two pilot sites. By fostering a reflective and collaborative environment, TLCs are expected to enhance educators’ professional development, encouraging the sharing of experiences, the exchange of innovative teaching strategies, and ongoing peer mentorship.
ACE Aotearoa and Ako Aotearoa anticipate that this research will lead to significant improvements in teaching practices and classroom management, ultimately benefiting both educators and learners across Aotearoa. CEO Hannah Pia Baral highlights the project as an exciting opportunity to explore new models of best practice delivery in adult learning.
