Creating learning environments where different ways of thinking and learning are supported
Every learner brings different strengths, experiences and ways of engaging with learning. Neurodiversity is part of this natural variation, and understanding it can help educators create more inclusive, accessible and supportive learning environments.
The Supporting Neurodiverse Learners workshop is designed specifically for people working in Adult and Community Education (ACE). It explores neurodiversity in an accessible and practical way, helping educators better understand neurodivergent learners and consider how teaching approaches, learning environments and communication can be adapted to support learner participation and success.
Through discussion, practical examples and strategies that can be applied in ACE settings, the workshop provides educators with greater confidence to respond to the diverse needs and strengths of their learners.
What will you explore?
During the workshop, you will:
- develop your understanding of neurodiversity and different forms of neurodivergence
- explore sensory, cognitive and communication differences and how these may influence learning
- challenge common myths and misconceptions about neurodiversity
- consider the experiences, strengths and barriers neurodivergent learners may encounter
- explore practical strategies for creating more accessible and inclusive learning environments
- identify approaches you can use to support participation, engagement and learner success
- have opportunities to ask questions and discuss situations you encounter in your own teaching practice.
Who is the workshop for?
This workshop is for people working across the ACE sector, including educators, tutors, kaiako, volunteers, staff and governance members.
You do not need specialist knowledge of neurodiversity. The workshop is designed to provide practical knowledge and strategies that can be applied across a wide range of adult learning environments.
