Wendel Karaiti dedicated many years of exceptional service as the Education Manager at REAP Wairarapa. With an intimate understanding of her community, Wendel possessed a remarkable ability to bring people together. Whether working with young mothers, at-risk youth, or older learners, she was solution-focused, always finding ways to meet the needs of the community.

Following her move to Christchurch, Wendel took on the role of Director at Risingholme Community Centre. During a time of immense challenges posed by the earthquake, the rebuild, and the untimely passing of the previous Director, she provided invaluable support to the community. She successfully oversaw the renovation of the Risingholme homestead and hall, a heritage asset in the Ōtautahi community, and modernised the centre's systems while revitalising its programmes. Since 2019, Wendel has been working in the Pacific region.

Wendel was elected to the ACE Aotearoa Board during the 2008 AGM in Manukau. Her contributions to the Board were immense, serving as co-chair for nine years and collaborating with various Directors, including Dr. Jo Lake and Colin McGregor, to address challenging issues within the sector. She played a crucial role in driving several significant sector projects forward and was a skilled facilitator known for her calm presence that inspired confidence. Wendel actively participated in and supported numerous local and national events, such as festival launches, parliamentary breakfasts, and annual conferences. She excelled as a host to overseas visitors and served as a wonderful ambassador. Wendel represented ACE Aotearoa as part of the NZ Delegation in Seoul, Korea, and also participated in leadership development work in Manila, Philippines, on behalf of ASPBAE.

Wendel possesses a deep love for people and a genuine passion for lifelong learning. Her leadership style is characterised by quiet engagement and efficiency, consistently delivering results with minimal fuss. She has displayed immense generosity towards the sector, patiently navigating numerous challenges along the way.

This award recognises an ACE Aotearoa member for outstanding service in, and contribution to, the development of the ACE Sector.  It is intended to be a tribute for outstanding work in governance, policy development, training, administration, or a combination of these.
