Jennifer Leahy: 2020 Award for Educator of the Year Tangata Tiriti

The 2020 ACE Aotearoa Annual Award for Educator of the Year Tangata Tiriti has been awarded to Jennifer Leahy.

Jennifer has long-standing experience as an adult educator working within the disability and prison sectors, lecturing in teacher education within the University of Canterbury and Ara Institute of Canterbury, and facilitating learning and development for the Department of Corrections.

Jennifer is currently the Ako Aotearoa Southern Hub Sector Services Manager. Within this role Jennifer not only coordinates professional development for the south Island’s tertiary sector teachers, trainers and educators but she also travels around New Zealand delivering workshops.

Jennifer has an enthusiasm for learning and teaching that is contagious. She is always trying to fine-tune her delivery approach and thrives on continuously improving. Through this approach she can cultivate the potential in others. Her awareness of learner needs ensures that everyone feels accepted.

Connection and safety for learners are priorities for Jennifer. She identifies and addresses every little detail in a workshop including ensuring she knows everyone’s name and embraces whakawhanaungatanga.
