Speaker - Roimata Smail

Roimata Smail (Ngāti Maniapoto, Tainui, Ngāti Kotimana, Ngāti Ingarangi) has worked for two decades as a human rights and public law barrister specialising in discrimination against Māori. She has represented iwi, hapū, whānau, urban Māori organisations and Māori owned and governed health and social service providers in the Courts and Waitangi Tribunal. She has also advised on settlement negotiations with the Crown involving the return of ancestral land and acting in litigation and negotiations with the Crown under the Foreshore and Seabed Act 2004 and the Marine and Coastal Area (Takutai Moana) Act 2011. Roimata is also a Treaty educator who has developed experiential workshops on Te Tiriti and the Wai Ako educational website for schools. She recently published Understanding Te Tiriti A Handbook of Basic Facts about Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Speaker - Dr Andrew Chen

Dr. Andrew Chen is an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow with Koi Tū: The Centre for Informed Futures at Waipapa Taumata Rau: The University of Auckland. With a background in computer engineering and AI, his academic work has focused on technology ethics, particularly use in the public sector. He has worked on digital contact tracing through the COVID-19 pandemic, facial recognition use by NZ Police, issues of social cohesion and societal resilience, and understanding the implementation of the Algorithm Charter. Andrew comments regularly in the media on digital technology issues, and sits on several private sector company Boards.

Creating Learner Stories - Nina Mercep and Sue West

Nina Mercep is an ESOL teacher and artist who grew in Auckland. She has family in Cyprus as well as Croatian roots in Aotearoa. Nina is a self-taught artist and is passionate about uplifting communities in creative ways as well as education and social justice. She lives with her son in West Auckland.

Instant Stories - Nicola Pauling

Nicola Pauling has been facilitating the professional, social and emotional development of people for over twenty years employing her extensive understanding of performance as a transformative tool for learning and growth. Using Applied Improvisation you will explore ways to co-create group stories, learn exercises that help people become confident storytellers and discover how play brings people into deeper relationship with others and how story sits at the heart of that experience.

Advocacy through Storytelling - Rachel Roberts

Rachel has a strong track record working with organisations on strategy, advocacy, relationship management, project development and implementation. She has worked in not for profit organisations, business and government agencies as diverse as philanthropy NZ and Search and Rescue. She is currently working with Inspiring Communities, leading their consultancy arm Powerdigm, 
 
Rachel has worked on a number of cross-sector projects and forums aimed at creating collaborative responses to the issues at hand. She is most interested in delivering strategic leadership that supports those that are authentically working towards fit for purpose and sustainable change. She believes that achievable outcomes are made possible through clarity and collective wisdom and she is adept at helping people translate their stories, experiences and motivations into positive action. 
In a previous life, Rachel was a journalist and radio producer working with Kim Hill and Linda Clark, amongst others on the RNZ’s Nine to Noon programme.

The Reading Revolution: Reingaging with Story - Kate Middleton

Kate created The Reading Revolution to serve our communities and works in close partnership with libraries, retirement villages, Auckland City Mission & Aotearoa & Pacific based writers. Shared Reading is a fun space for personal growth and private healing for many diverse people working creatively and collectively. Kate will lead some shared reading to give participants a sense of how the programme works and how it might be applied in a variety of settings.

A Bit Sus - Information Literacy for the Digital Space - Mandy Henk

Mandy is a writer, speaker and leader in the critical technology space. She brings expertise in identifying trends, understanding root causes and facing the challenges of the 21st century. She will share her approach to information literacy and how to determine fact from fiction.

Storytelling through Fabric Art - Maungarongo Te Kawa (Ngāti Porou)

Ron is a fabric artist, storyteller and educator well known to the sector for his beautiful Whakapapa Quilts and workshops which guide participants to express their creativity and genealogy through fabric. His work is held in many galleries throughout Aotearoa and he has been the recipient of a number of awards including the ACE Aotearoa Educator of the Year Tangata Whenua Award.

Pathways Awarua: Empowering Learners to Achieve their Goals - Michael Grawe

Michael is an experienced educator, focussing on literacy and numeracy education. He is the Professional Learning Manager at Pathways Awarua and a Professional Learning and Development Consultant at Ako Aotearoa. Michael will lead participants through the Pathways Awarua tool demonstrating how it empowers learners to achieve their goals.
